02 · WEIGHT AND GEOMETRY

The fourth wheel has a job.

A four-wheel figure skating frame carries more components than a three-wheel frame.

That additional wheel is not there to make the frame longer or heavier. It creates the third balance zone.

The center wheel is a pivot. The skater moves between the front and rear balance zones.

An ice blade has front, center and rear balance zones across its rocker.

The additional wheel adds weight. It also changes the geometry.

Three wheels create two balance zones. Four wheels create three.

The two center wheels create the stable center skating zone that a three-wheel frame cannot provide.

For EDGE, that is the trade-off: more components in exchange for the geometry required to reproduce the three balance zones of an ice blade.

WHY THE EXTRA WEIGHT EXISTS

The additional weight is a consequence of the fourth-wheel architecture. The third balance zone is the reason for it.

THE DESIGN PRIORITY

The goal was never to build the lightest frame. It was to build the geometry figure skating requires.
