LEARN TO SKATE
OVERVIEW
Learn the five key things to think about when finding your basic skating position.
KEY POINTS
Toes slightly pointed out.
Knees slightly bent.
Arms slightly forward.
Head looking straight.
Weight slightly forward.
PRACTICE
Find the skating position and check each of the five points. Keep your weight slightly forward without leaning too far forward or too far back.
OVERVIEW
Learn how to come down from a forward fall and two ways to get back onto your skates.
KEY POINTS
If you feel yourself falling forward, try to fall toward one side or diagonally.
Use your hands as you come down.
To stand, bring one foot underneath you.
Use your hands for support as needed.
Come into a squat and return to your skating position.
PRACTICE
Practice getting from the floor to one foot underneath you, then into a squat before standing back into your skating position.
OVERVIEW
Learn how lifting the knees from your skating position begins to move the skates forward.
KEY POINTS
Begin in your skating position.
Lift your knees with your toes pointed out.
Bring each foot back toward the center as you put it down.
Avoid allowing the feet to keep moving farther apart.
As you gain speed, the movement will begin to create a glide.
PRACTICE
March forward while focusing on lifting the knees and bringing each foot back toward the center before the next step.
OVERVIEW
Use the speed created by your Forward March to bring both skates together and glide forward.
KEY POINTS
Begin by marching forward.
Build a little speed before trying to glide.
Bring your feet parallel together.
Stay in your skating position.
Allow the skates to roll forward without continuing to march.
PRACTICE
March until you have some forward speed, bring both feet parallel, and hold your skating position while you glide.
OVERVIEW
Combine your skating position, Forward March and Forward glide with a controlled dip while continuing to roll.
KEY POINTS
Begin in your skating position.
Keep your feet parallel.
Bring your arms forward as you lower into the dip.
Reach forward to help keep your weight over your skates.
March first, glide, then add the dip.
PRACTICE
Build speed with your Forward March, move into your Forward glide, then reach forward and lower into the dip while keeping your weight over the skates.
