ONE ACADEMY · SIT SPINS

Learn figure skating
sit spins.

Build your sit spinning from the basic position through the Back Sit Spin and Change Foot Sit Spin.

Start with the Sit Spin
01 SIT SPINS

Sit Spin

Carry the speed in. Then get low.

KEY IDEA The arm and free leg go around together and down together.

WHAT YOU ARE LEARNING

Learn how to carry momentum into a Sit Spin, coordinate the arm and free leg, find a low position that works on inline figure skates and exit without falling forward onto the EDGE pick.

The position may feel different from your Sit Spin on ice. In this lesson, more bend in the skating leg helps keep the balance where it needs to be on inline figure skates.

COACH'S POINTS

Six things to remember.

06
01 Press softly on the EDGE pick

Once the spin begins, friction starts taking speed away. Use light EDGE pick pressure so you are not slowing the spin more than necessary.

02 Bend the skating leg

A straighter ice-style position can move your balance too far back on inline figure skates. Experiment with more bend in the skating leg so you can stay supported through the spin.

03 Bring the arm and free leg around together

The right arm and right leg are working together through the entry. They travel around as one unit to help create the momentum for the spin.

04 Go down together

The same arm and free-leg relationship continues as you lower. They come around together, then go down together into the Sit Spin position.

05 Do not spin beyond your control

Do not chase another revolution once the spin is already fading. If five rotations are controlled, trying to force six or seven can make you catch the EDGE pick harder or lose the position.

06 Push out onto the right foot

Open from the Sit Spin and push out from the left foot onto the right foot into the landing position. Use a slight arch through the back and stay on the center two wheels. If the body falls forward, you can catch the EDGE pick and lose the exit.

BUILD THE SPIN

Power first. Position second.

01
Enter

Use your chosen entry and create momentum before the spin begins.

02
Around

Bring the right arm and right leg around together.

03
Down

Lower the arm and free leg together into the Sit Spin.

04
Bend

Keep enough bend in the skating leg to maintain your balance.

05
Rise

Come up before the spin reaches the point where you lose control.

06
Land

Open from the left-foot spin, push onto the right foot and hold the landing position on the center two wheels.

PRACTICE

Stop while it is still good.

Start with a manageable number of rotations. Focus on carrying speed into the spin, keeping the arm and free leg together and maintaining the bent skating-leg position. Come up before the spin begins to break down.

TARGET Hold a controlled low Sit Spin, then push out from the left foot onto the right foot and hold the landing position on the center two wheels.
02 SIT SPINS

Back Sit Spin

The push creates the second spin.

KEY IDEA The pushing foot gives you the speed.

WHAT YOU ARE LEARNING

Learn how to move from an upright spin into a Back Sit Spin by using a small back pivot to create the second rotation, then lowering into a position you can maintain on inline figure skates.

The position may need more bend than the Back Sit Spin you use on ice. The aim is to find the position that keeps you balanced enough to continue rotating.

COACH'S POINTS

Seven things to remember.

06
01 Keep the skating leg bent

On inline figure skates, a straighter Back Sit position can move your balance too far backward. Experiment with more bend in the skating leg so you can stay supported through the rotation.

02 Start from the upright spin

Establish the upright rotation first. The Back Sit Spin is taught here as a transition from that first controlled spin rather than as a completely separate entry.

03 Put the EDGE pick down before the change

As the transition begins, put the EDGE pick down. The right arm comes through while the left foot pushes against the floor to create the speed for the second spin.

04 The left foot creates the speed

For the direction shown in the lesson, the left foot pushes against the floor as the right arm comes through. That push is where the momentum for the Back Sit Spin comes from.

05 Think of the change as a small back pivot

As you move from one foot to the other, use a compact back-pivot action. Practice that change without going low first so you can understand how the second rotation is created.

06 Use light EDGE pick pressure

Once you find the Back Sit Spin, experiment with pressing as lightly as possible on the EDGE pick. Too much weight forward increases friction and slows the spin.

07 Come up and out on the same foot

The Back Sit Spin is on the right foot, and the clean exit stays on that same foot. Come up from the spin, stay over the center two wheels and stretch into the landing position. If you have to step out while learning, finish with a clear landing position before trying again.

BUILD THE BACK SIT

Learn the change before going low.

01
Upright

Establish the first upright spin.

02
EDGE pick

Put the EDGE pick down to prepare the transition.

03
Push

Use the left foot to generate momentum as the right arm comes through.

04
Pivot

Let the change happen through the small back-pivot action.

05
Down

Lower into the Back Sit position with the skating leg bent.

06
Finish

Come up from the Back Sit Spin on the right foot, stay on the center two wheels and stretch into the landing position.

PRACTICE

Practice the pivot first.

Begin with the upright spin and practice only the change of foot. Put the EDGE pick down, push through the small back pivot and establish the second spin without lowering. Once that transition feels familiar, add the Back Sit position.

TARGET Create the second spin from the pivot, lower into a balanced Back Sit Spin, then come up and out on the right foot into the landing position on the center two wheels.
03 SIT SPINS

Change Foot Sit Spin

Come up. Change. Push around.

KEY IDEA Push around to create the second spin.

WHAT YOU ARE LEARNING

Learn how to connect a Sit Spin to a second Sit Spin on the opposite foot by coming up, changing feet and using the push around to create the second rotation.

The important part of the change is not simply putting the other foot down. You need to use the change to generate enough momentum for the second spin before lowering back into the Sit Spin position.

COACH'S POINTS

Five things to remember.

05
01 Come up before the change

Start from the Sit Spin and come up before changing feet. Give yourself the position and space to make the change rather than trying to switch feet while you are still low.

02 Put the right EDGE pick and front wheel down

As you come up from the first Sit Spin, put the right EDGE pick down to prepare the change. From this position, you can push around and create the rotation for the second spin.

03 Push around into the second spin

This is the key to the change. Once the right EDGE pick is down, use the left foot to push around and create the speed and rotation for the second spin. Do not simply step onto the right foot.

04 Establish the second spin before going low

Let the push create the second rotation first. Once you have changed feet and the second spin is working, lower into the Sit Spin position. Do not rush straight down through the change.

05 Practice the change upright first

You do not need to practice the complete Change Foot Sit Spin every time. Work on the foot change and push while staying upright so you can understand how the second rotation is created before adding the low position.

BUILD THE CHANGE

Create the second spin first.

01
Sit

Establish the first Sit Spin.

02
Come up

Rise out of the first Sit Spin before changing feet.

03
Change

Put the right EDGE pick down to prepare the change.

04
Push around

Push around with the left foot to create the rotation on the right foot.

05
Go down

Once the second rotation is established, lower into the Sit Spin.

06
Finish

Come up from the second Sit Spin on the right foot, stay on the center two wheels and stretch into the landing position.

PRACTICE

Learn the change upright.

Practice the change without going into the Sit Spin position. Come up, change feet and concentrate on pushing around strongly enough to create the second rotation. Once you can feel where that rotation comes from, add the Sit Spin position back in.

TARGET Use the change and push around to create a controlled second spin on the right foot, lower into the Back Sit position, then come up and out on the same foot.
