BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Three things to
understand first.

ONE Academy is more than a collection of skating videos. These three sections explain the learning system, how to use it effectively and how it will continue to develop.

01
UNDERSTAND THE SYSTEM What is ONE Academy?
01

What it is

ONE Academy is a structured learning system designed to teach inline figure skating progressively.

02

Who it is for

It is for anyone who wants to learn inline figure skating, from someone putting skates on for the first time to experienced skaters developing more advanced skills.

03

What you can learn

You can learn the foundations of skating and progress through edges, turns, jumps, spins, footwork and more advanced elements.

04

How the curriculum is structured

The curriculum is organized so that each element builds the skills and understanding needed for what comes next.

05

What we are building

The goal is to build a complete inline figure skating education system that gives skaters a clear path from learning their first steps to becoming complete skaters.

LEARN HOW TO LEARN How to use ONE Academy
01

Where to start

If you are new to skating, begin with Learn to Skate. Experienced skaters can start at the level that matches their current ability.

02

Preview the level

Watch through the level first so your brain has a roadmap of what you are going to learn before you begin practicing.

03

One new element at a time

Focus your attention on learning one new element rather than trying to learn several new things at once.

04

How to watch the lessons

Watch the lesson several times, including the demonstrations, and make sure you understand what you are trying to do before practicing it.

05

How to practice

Practice with focused attempts. Review what happened, make one correction and try again rather than repeating the same mistake without thinking.

06

Keep previous elements in your practice

Skills you have already learned should remain part of your regular practice so they become natural rather than disappearing as you progress.

07

When to move to the next element

Move on when you can perform the element consistently, under control and understand what you are doing rather than succeeding occasionally by chance.

08

When you have completed a level

A level is complete when you can demonstrate all of its requirements consistently and under control, not simply because you have watched every lesson.

09

Everyone progresses at a different speed

There is no reason to rush. Different skaters need different amounts of practice to develop the same skill.

SIMPLE PRACTICE LOOP

01 Attempt

Try the element with one clear focus.

02 Review

Decide what actually happened.

03 Correct

Choose one thing to change.

04 Repeat

Try again with the correction.

03
SEE WHERE THIS IS GOING How ONE Academy is being built
01

Why the current lessons were recorded naturally

The first lessons were deliberately recorded as natural coaching sessions so I could concentrate on getting the knowledge out rather than trying to make the first version perfect.

02

First goal was capturing the knowledge

The priority was to capture what I actually teach, how I explain it and the coaching details that might otherwise remain in my head.

03

We now have the videos and transcripts

Every lesson gives us both the original teaching video and a transcript that can be analyzed and developed further.

04

The current lessons are already useful

Rather than waiting until everything is perfect, ONE Academy already gives skaters lessons they can watch, understand and start using.

05

A consistent teaching structure

The next versions will take everything captured in the original lessons and organize it into a clearer and more consistent learning system.

06

Better demonstrations and coaching points

Each lesson will become clearer about what you are learning, what to watch for, the important coaching points and the mistakes to avoid.

07

Practice instructions

Lessons will increasingly tell you not only how to perform an element, but how to actually practice and learn it.

08

Requirements and assessments

Elements and levels will have clearer requirements so skaters can understand what they should be able to demonstrate before progressing.

09

Follow-along practice

We will build sessions where you can skate along with me at the correct pace instead of simply watching a lesson and practicing alone.

10

Follow-along assessments

We will also create assessments you can skate through to see what you can already do and identify exactly what you need to work on next.

11

Continuous refinement

ONE Academy is being built as a living education system that will keep developing as we learn more from skaters, coaches and how people actually use it.
